No one wants to be involved in a motor vehicle accident, but accidents happen. Utah requires drivers to carry a minimum amount of auto insurance, and if you are involved in a car accident without insurance, there are many potential consequences you may face.

The severity of those consequences depends on several factors, including who is at fault and damages caused. So today, we’ll be looking at those consequences and how Ipson Law can help.

Utah Auto Insurance Requirements

Utah drivers are required to carry a minimum amount of car insurance. Those minimums are:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury
  • $65,000 per accident for bodily injury
  • $15,000 per accident for property damages

Additionally, Utah law dictates that drivers must carry a minimum of $3,000 in personal injury protection, coverage that pays for your personal medical expenses in the event of an accident.

Can You Be Arrested for No Car Insurance

Yes, you can be arrested for no car insurance in Utah.

If you are caught driving without the minimum amount of insurance, you may face a class C misdemeanor, which can carry a maximum of $1,000 in fines and up to 90 days of jail time. However, there are additional consequences you may face if you’re involved in a car accident without insurance

At-Fault Consequences after a Car Accident without Insurance

If you’re found at-fault in a car accident without insurance, you may face several severe consequences, including:

  • You could be on the hook for the other party’s medical expenses exceeding $3,000 and property damage costs
  • You may face fines and jail time
  • Your license may be suspended or revoked
  • Your insurance rates may rise
  • Your vehicle can be impounded

Not-At-Fault Consequences after a Car Accident without Insurance

While the consequences of a car accident without insurance are generally less severe if you are not-at-fault, that doesn’t mean you’ll be off the hook. You may still face several consequences, including:

  • Jail time or fines
  • License suspension or revocation
  • Vehicle impounding
  • Your own out-of-pocket expenses
